The boat went fast, of course it was cold, very cold, but with the warm gear they gave us (to wear on top of our own layers), it was perfect! When we got back from the trip, we were provided with warm drinks and snacks and sat around the cosy fire chatting before we all headed off to do different things. I’d definitively recommend Pukka for their RIB tour of the fjord around Tromsø. All the staff were friendly, accommodating and professional at the same time. Before going, I worried slightly about getting sea sick (past experiences), but the boat goes super fast, you look forwards and absorb the beauty and not even an ‘s’ of the seasickness popped up! The northern lights appeared as we left harbour and continued to amaze throughout. When we anchored in the middle of a fjord with the engine silenced, we sat in the quiet, taking in the lights, shooting stars and beauty of the landscape - it was wonderful. But it did not start like that. My trip/booking was canceled due to the bad weather forecast and I could not join even the one they offered me the day before... it was full... and even if the weather would be good tomorrow, there was not enough people...
But I went to Norway ONLY for that trip! I was sad, very. So when Pukka team heard about that next morning... they just called and said something like "hey, the weather seems to be good and you are booked for the trip!"
No questions asked I went to the meeting point to discover there was nobody. Except me and the captain!
And perfect weather.
And the best sunset in weeks.

Arriving at Pukka's office, they had arctic overalls and boots for those who need better gear to keep warm.

We loaded up the minibus and headed to the coast where there was no clouds and the best chance of seeing the lights even though the chances were low.

We headed out as a group of some individuals and some people who were from the Queen Elizabeth Cruise Ship but by the time we got back we got on well as a group.

When we arrived at their location we were on a beach at the coast, and the first task was to light a fire. That was followed by hot drinks and then later a reindeer stew apparently traditionally served at weddings which went down a treat. Reindeer was similar to somewhere between lamb and beef and was tender and wonderful.

After a long time there was nothing to suggest that the lights would be out.

There were discussions about moving to another location and when we decided to move I pulled down my camera from the tripod and then she appeared.

There wasnt a lot of activity but she was certainly there.

Our host had set up a camera and was taking photos of each group in front of the lights and sent us a link later to access them. They were impressive photos as she required you to stand still for about 6 seconds and at about three seconds lit you up briefly with a torch and the end result was fantastic.

Once she died out we then went back into the minivan to see if we could see them on the drive back.

We frequently stopped to check if they were out as only cameras would pick them up, without success.

It had been arranged that we would be back in Tromso by 12.45am so that we could drop off the people back to the ship by their 1.00am curfew but we had seen the lights and indications were that that would have been it for the night.

It would be advisable to take a small torch with you as we were walking over frosty grass and rocks. Also suitable footwear was advisable as it was cold and slippery.

If you could carry a small folding stool etc would have also been good as they had yoga mats to sit on, for those who were older, it was more difficult.

A great company and a great experience.

They cant guarantee that the lights will show, but they certainly did everything they could to see them and photograph you with them if they came out.

We got out the bus and saw the milkyway first and after some minutes the northern lights show. The aktivity wasnt very strong but it was incredible to see anyway.
The chatting at the campfire was very nice and the soup and wraps were delicious. We had a small group of 7 people. Our Guide Camilla was very nice and provided us with lots of information about the lights and norway itself. I would recommend this experience. Even if the wheather conditions are bad, they will make it possible. read less

Pukka People are the Best Having only 3 days in Tromsø, and knowing the aurora can be elusive, we signed up for a Pukka mini-bus... read moreHaving only 3 days in Tromsø, and knowing the aurora can be elusive, we signed up for a Pukka mini-bus tour the night after a Pukka sail with amazing guide Clement, where we indeed saw the lights while in the bay. So the bus tour was a bonus already. We had a new guide, Debbie, who knew the area well and on a very cloudy night at 6pm took us to the coast for some hoped for cloud gaps. Magically, after settling in at the beautiful beach by 8:00pm, we faced the iconic rock in the water on the horizon at Sommarøi, about an hour from Tromsø. While waiting, several other tour groups arrived, so in high season be prepared for aurora' traffic' now that Tromsø has become a big tourist destination! As we waited, the horizon whitened, but only the camera captured the green. Magically from exactly 10-11pm, a gap in the clouds passed right over us, allowing for photos of the green light across the big dipper, reflected on the sea--what a beautiful night! The trademark soup was served at a fire, and we all had thermal suits and nylon chair to stay warm and comfortable. In all, I spent 3 days on various Pukka tours and in each case, the guides were exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, skilled, and all loved the Arctic. The food was always home-cooked, excellent and tasty. The prices are reasonable and the staff responsive. If you are used to a bit of comfort at hotels, ask about paying extra to book at something other than the budget hotel they use to keep prices affordable, which is the size of a double bed, plus 12 inches, plus a private bathroom. I suggest Pukka add this as an option. I will travel with Pukka again. read less

The guide, Hubert, was very nice and easy going. I was the only one participant. The hike wasn’t very easy, but due to weather conditions but I felt safe. Appreciate the meal at the end of the hike.
