About The Lofoten Scenic Drive
Although there is plenty to see in Lofoten, some of the best sights are located along the main road!
Along the European long-distance path E10, the scenic route through Lofoten runs through some of the country’s most exceptionally beautiful and dramatic landscapes. At the base of the 1,000m tall mountains peaks, small fishing villages ornament the fjords.
The rich fishing history remains in Lofoten; small docks lie on the calm waters of the fjords, drying racks line the coast, and colourful fishing boats populate the gulfstream. The scenic drive across speckled islands from Svolvaer to Reine redefines a road trip. Immerse yourself in the coastal culture and capture every picture along the way.
Beginning in Svolvaer, the administrative center of the vågan municipality, and a popular starting point for Lofoten explorers. Svolvaer is the home of recognized Scandinavian hotels and restaurants. Local events take place in the quaint town promenade and unique cafes and bars line the picturesque harbour. Surrounding Svolvaer is the steep mountain and recognized hike/ rock formation, Svolværgeita.
Further down the E10 highway is Gimsøya links surrounding islands with two stunning bridges. The nearby island Austvågøya is connected by the Gimsøystraumen Bridge and to the island of Vestvågøya by the Sundklakkstraumen Bridge. Gimsoya stands out in Lofoten because it is one of the few places where it is mostly flat. The clam marshland is on the north and west side of the island and is the home for thousands of birds (Gimsøymyrene naturreservat).
Passing further down the main road of the Lofoten archipelago, we come across Vestvågøya. The main sight on the lush plain is the Viking Museum. The museum is constructed from the reserved longhouse of the Viking chieftain’s house at Borg and like the Vikings, is a lot bigger than you expect!
Leknes is located geographically in the center of the Lofoten archipelago. It became a town less than 20 years ago and has grown to be the most populous town in Lofoten with 3,600 people. It is the only place in Lofoten with its city centre not located by the sea. Leknes has a regional airport, bus terminal, and shopping center.
Continuing down towards Flakstadøy keeps the beautiful views coming. The island of Moskenesøya sits across the fjord. The main village on Moskenesøya is Fredvang which is only accessible by the Fredvang Bridge. This bridge is the only road connection to the village from the rest of Norway. The south bridge is called Kubholmleia Bridge (Norwegian: Kubholmleia bru). The north bridge is Røssøystraumen Bridge (Norwegian: Røssøystraumen bru).
Ramberg has become the center of Flakstad and served as a trading point in the Pomor trade period in the 1700’s. The Flakstad church was built in 1780 from drift timber from Northwest Russia in exchange for fish. The white sand beach has also made Ramberg beach impossible to pass.
Coming down to the point of the Lofoten, archipelago Moskenesøya, the outermost island in this long chain. This area is loaded with dramatic landscapes and all the settlements are concentrated along the eastern coastline.
